The Democratic Women’s Club of Walton County voted in December to contribute our books this year to De Funiak Middle School and to continue with books that feature all kinds of different diverse groups from Native Americans, Latino Americans to African Americans, who were left out of the original Common Core lists of books for young readers. One of our members, Susie Arnold, who had been involved in choosimg our books, passed away last month. Members of our club have agreed that our contribution this year will be in the name of Susie Arnold.
An ongoing project by the Walton Democratic Women has been to augment the collections for Young Adults at the libraries in Walton County with new books. Last year we joined the Women of the Walton County Black Caucus to donate a set of new books to the Maude Sanders Elementary School and a similar set for children and Young Adults to the DeFuniak Springs Library. We have previously contributed books to the Coastal Branch Library in South Walton and to the Gladys Milton Library in Flowersview. Sundog Books at Seaside in South Walton gave the group a generous discount as a contribution to children’s reading materials in Walton County.
